The Power of Music - Flame by The Echoing Green music video

I know this blog is about writing and books, but sometimes we gotta sit back and chill to a good song, don't you think? To me, this is a good song. The Echoing Green has been spinning in my CD player for years now, but they're still a somewhat unknown band in Christian music. The electronic genre hasn't made a big splash in the Christian market yet, I guess. These guys could be called synthpop in some ways (at least in their early days). They've branched into a little bit darker sound (not in a bad way) with their new tunes of late. I'll listen to anything they come up with.

This video is for their song called "Flame". The song's been around for a couple years, but they're just now making a video for it. I suspect it'll appear on the album they've been working on for about the same amount of time now. I'm intrigued with the concept behind this. It tells a story. I'd love to know what you think about the lyrics and the video. What story do you think it's telling?

That's one of the great things about music. It pulls on your emotions, takes you to a place. Think about movie soundtracks. Without a single word uttered a scene is set. Songs can inspire just like a magnificent painting. It's all art. Whether we paint with brush, pen or keyboard, we're all artists tugging on the emotions of humanity.

Maybe this post is about writing after all. :)

Music is a HUGE influence on my writing. I keep a long list of soundtracks and listen to one whenever I'm writing. I don't generally try to pick music that fits the scene's mood; I prefer to just play a random CD and let the music take me. It can get rather interesting at times... try writing a battle scene to Wallace and Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit!

So kind of you to say nice things about this song - especially with regards to the lyrics... this song was out of the norm for me, topically. <-- if that's even a real word.

I'll give you the basic story:

I had a dear friend who, even as a long-time Christian, found himself at an impasse. A deadlock between his heart, flesh, and mind. A friend who spent so much of his life in what seemed to be an unrelenting struggle, that he decided to throw in the towel, concede defeat, and quit trying. I would be lying if I said I never felt like that in my own life, maybe not as intense as what my friend was dealing with, but conflicted, tired, and frustrated nonetheless.

The 'flame' in my friend's life was not the good kind. It started as a spark. The little human struggles we all have as we wrestle our own wills and try to line them up with God's. My friend both desired and despised these things in his life, but slowly he stopped wrestling and the spark became a fire that would shake him to his very foundation.

This song is about being a friend. A REAL friend. The kind that prays for ways to encourage someone like that in your life. It's NOT easy... the precarious balance between not condoning, yet not condemning is a difficult one to find. I found myself praying for both the guts to say "It's NOT ok." and the grace to do it lovingly... in a way that would remind them that taking up our cross is a wonderful thing.

There is beauty in struggle. Sometimes It seems like we barely make it through one trial only to start the next one. As long as we are in this mortal coil, our struggles will never relent. The beautiful part of it, the part where we comfort and strengthen each other is in just that... we are united. We all struggle together...

Thank God. :)

What a great surprise to read your comment explaining how you wrote this song. I've wondered, and I really appreciate your posting it. Flame has become a song I can play over and over and really come away with a picture of the person you describe.

Keep writing awesome music with Chrissy!
