Rebekah Guzman (Advice for Novelists, Part 15)

We're still continuing this popular series in which editors, publicists, agents and authors give their responses to the question:

"If you could say one thing to aspiring novelists, what would you say?"

Rebekah Guzman weighs in today...

One thing I like to remind any writer is simply this: You can’t create and perfect at the same time. While most editors love an author's attention to details, don’t feel like you have to get everything right the first time. Jot down your thoughts, create the content, and then set it aside for some time and come back to it later. Keep in mind that editors are here to help you. I love coming alongside a writer to make his/her work the best it can be. Also, remember to pray for wisdom as you create (for now)—and later as we perfect, together.

Does that mean I can stop obsessing over every little detail and just finish the darn thing?

Sorry. I'm frustrated. I love my story sometimes, but tonight I feel like it's the story God wants me to write, and we're not exactly agreeing. He always wins. I shouldn't be surprised.

Writing in a void is such a difficult process. Finding these blogs helps, but it's not like having someone reading with you and saying, "Let's try it this way." Even critique groups get frustrating when you realize half or more have just as little experience as you do and they're all saying something different.

Ah, rants. Again, sorry.

An effective editor, such as the very talented Mrs. Guzman, is invaluable to the writing process. Many writers struggle until they learn to utilize an editor--throughout the writing process--not just at "the end."
